Leinster Chess Championships 2011
The Leinster Chess championships 2011 took place in the Teacher’s Club in Dublin’s city centre over the Easter weekend 22nd – 24th April. 65 players took part in the tournament competing in four different playing sections.
 
Masters
Leinster Champion John JoyceThe Master’s Section, with 12 competitors, was particularly hard fought with the two top seeds, Colm Daly FM and David Fitzsimons losing games in the early rounds. Eventually no less than 4 players tied for first place on a score of 4/6 - John Joyce of Bray/Greystones, Kilkenny Chess Club’s Zaidan Zulkipli, Gonzaga’s Gordon Freeman and Elm Mount’s David Fitzsimons. The Leinster Champion for 2011 is John Joyce on tie-break. Dun Laoghaire’s Tony Fox won a grading prize in the section. Picture shows John Joyce (right) receiving the trophy from Rory Delaney.

Majors
Major winner Rory DelaneyIn the Majors Section , Rory Delaney of Dublin University won outright with an unbeaten score of 5/6 followed by 4 players on 4 points in 2nd – 5th place. Colm Fitzpatrick of Phibsborough and Peter Lynch of Rathmines finished 2nd and 3rd respectively on tie break, with Peter also picking up a grading prize. There were 14 players in the section. Challenger winner William FfrenchThe Challengers Section had 18 competitors and was won outright by Elm Mount’s William Ffrench (pictured on right) on an unbeaten score of 5/6. Mark Finnigan of Bray/Greystones and Paddy Divilly of Longford chess Club finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, both on a score of 4.5/6. The grading prize was won by Ronan Murphy of Elm Mount chess club.

Junior winner Zaran ButtThe Juniors Section had 21 competitors and was won outright by newcomer Zaran Butt (pictured on right) with the highest score of the weekend 5.5/6. Seamus Flynn of Cavan Chess Club was runner up on 4.5/6 while five players finished 3rd to 7th on a score of 4/6. Martin Desmond of Portmarnock finished 3rd on tie break with Padraig Hughes (Kilkenny) and Nikhil George Rajesh (Elm Mount) winning the grading prizes.
