Irish Ch. and Olympiad update…when?

The Irish Senior championships kicks off tomorrow and we are in the amazing position where the participants do not know weather the winner and runner up will get a place on this years Olympiad team or the winner of this years championship plus the winner of last years championships will get a place on the team.
Hopefully Jonathan or someone else reading this can contact the ICU and obtain some urgent feedback?
Previously we were informed very kindly by Jonathan that the matter was being looked into.
Dated June 6th from Jonathan O’ Connor (spokesman for the ICU)
“This evening, I spoke to Nicola Benson, the current secretary of the ICU, and she tells me she is going through the records, looking at the minutes kept by previous secretaries. She is hoping to make these available on the ICU website for further perusal by the membership. At that stage, we will know what the official records of the ICU say in this matter.
Whatever the outcome of these investigations is, it is clear that Mark Quinn will only have a place on the team if he wins the Irish this year, or one of the other players above him in the WAR list wins. Alex Lopez will have a place, (Gerry Graham wrote to me to say that Alex paid his membership on 24 May, but that the website has not been updated with this information), unless 2 places are reserved on the team for either the top 2 players in the 2010 championship or Colm Daly, who won in 2009, and the winner of 2010.”

On the matter of the team captains the ICU has confirmed to me that they have received my submission for consideration for the men’s team captain’s position. We also know that Darko Polimac has applied for the women’s team captain’s position and we are not aware of any other candidates to date.
Would it be possible to get some feedback here or on the ICU site as to whom if any other candidates have applied for the positions?
Regards
Martin.

Results for rd 3 on ICU now it’s Griffiths versus Mark Orr in Rd 4 and Mark seems to be back on form. It is great to see players who were strong when I was learning chess, coming back to chess tournaments, Paul Wallace being one example and of course our very own John Delaney.

Orr´s on a roll at the moment – Brady and Daly on successive days. I didn´t think he´d be a serious contender. For me, shock of the tournament so far is Kalam´s win over O´Connell today. Surely that has to be a typo??

  • martin crichton says:

    The Orr march continues.

Life in the old dog yet!

Tomorrow we have a battle of the ages…will the wise old head prevail or will it be a case of cannon fodder for the up and coming young un?

Each day throws up suprises…fascinating to follow.

    Regards
    Martin.

  • How come Kalam won his game and a has to go down boards?

  • Peter Cafolla says:

    Get real guys,Kalam lost.
I will now accept apologies from all who scoffed when I suggested a few weeks ago that Orr and Short were live contenders!!
Martin, you were wrong about the knackers yard, after losing a rook and pawn ending two pawns up today I’d be lucky if the knackers yard would even accept me.

  • brendan says:

the result must be a typo as Gerry has gone up the boards

  • Peter Cafolla says:

Some weird results today,,,Benson should have beaten Fitzsimons,,,Keogh self combusted in a nice position (possibly winning) . Butler lost a drawn ending, I lost a probably won ending ,,,,,,,,,,,,a day of howlers and lucky results not to mention a near row between the Controller and a competitor during a time scramble and another chicken hearted player (who shall remain nameless) doing something chickenlike,,,,,,,,I’m sure he will pay me a tenner tomorrow for my continuing silence :) …………or else!!

  • Michael says:

What about Daly’s imaginative bishop sac against Orr today? That looked like the critical point there. Could he have followed up better by swapping queens on f2 when he had the chance and getting his passers rolling?

BTW it’d take pressure off the controller if FIDE time controls were used instead, thereby getting rid of the allegro finish of the final session. That would mean players would have to record all moves, draw claims are out the window, illegal moves wouldn’t happen, etc.

  • Peter Cafolla says:

How did you see the Daly game? Are games online somewhere?

  • Michael says:

In pgn on ICU Irish champs page. At the moment there’s only 2 games on it. They’re asking players to submit their own games in pgn.

  • brendan says:

to cheer you all up, today it is your pc that beats you, tomorrow it will be your watch :-)

off topic, I think we need a misc section and i can’t find my password

Every time I try to open a pgn file in chessbase it says “cannot access database” . Any chessbase expert know why?

  • BREAKING NEWS: Carlsen set to start a new career. Go to chessbase for more.

  • martin crichton says:

no suprise here looks like Darkos sources were correct

    Dear Martin

Thankyou for applying for the post of Captain for the Irish men’s Olympiad team. Unfortunately you have been unsuccessful in your application. The Irish Chess Union Executive have appointed Gerry Graham as Men’s Captain.

    best wishes Nicola Benson

  • Peter Cafolla says:

Carlsen a fashion model?? With that face????????

  • Conor says:

Yes, Carlsen new model for G-star, and on the 10th of September he is playing a world chess challenge where you get to vote for moves online.

  • John Delaney says:

    The link

provides more information on Olympiad selection.

  • Pat carey says:

    You mean DISINFORMATION surely?

What a bunch of dishonest devious sons of …. If it were up to me I have these creeps hung drawn and, well you get the picture.

LIARS and snakes the lot of them.

I will gladly help with the financial cost of any legal action against the ICU by the 2009 Irish Champion. He should sue their asses and make them pay all costs.

  • Peter Cafolla says:

I just don’t get it…..it says in the minutes of the 2005 ICU AGM “That 2 places on the men’s Olympiad team are reserved for the top 2 places in future Irish Senior Championships.” (Martin Crichton) – The motion was seconded by John Healy. Martin Crichton spoke on his motion, and there were various comments for and against it. There were 15 votes for and 14 against, and it was therefore passed……..is 15 not greater than 14?? How on Earth is that motion “open to various interpretations” as the ICU claim?
I think Daly and/or Philip Short are being shafted here and I agree with Pat that they should get legal advice. I don’t remember seeing Mark Quinn at any tournament in the last 12 months apart from Kilkenny so I’m not quite sure how he qualifies. I also think it was typically underhand and devious that the announcement of the team should be hidden away under “articles” on the ICU site. Shame on all concerned.

  • martin crichton says:

    name and shame…
    those devious involved
Baburin, Graham, Scarry, Fox, Benson, Quinn, and Keogh….others?
lol how many on the above name and shame list going to the Olympiad?
All suspicions and conspiracy theories have come to pass!
